Product Description This concert of music by Richard Nanes was recorded on the occasion of the composer's visit to Kiev, the capital city of the Republic of the Ukraine. The world premiere of the Nanes 3rd Symphony the Holocaust was performed in the Kiev Opera House. The Kharkiv Festival Orchestra conducted by Virko Baley was a highlight of the Kiev International Music Festival. In addition, the composer himself played three of his piano compositions in the concert hall of the Kiev Conservatory. This DVD is more of usual interest, as it presents the world premiere performance of a significant new symphony by the gifted American composer, Richard Nanes. A meditation on the World War II Holocaust, considerable stretches of the 3rd Symphony are reminiscent of middle-period Shostakovich, who Nanes credits as an influence on his music. Richard Nanes has been recognized internationally as a brilliant pianist composer. Beautifully performed and recorded, this DVD performance contains powerful statements showing a distinctively strong musical personality. His compositions are colorfully written, exhibiting contrasting passages of pulsating energy with moments of quiet lyricism.
