Award-winning Ernest Markham Clematis cultivar features large, open, magenta-pink flowers and is easy to care for and fast growing. Train it to climb or leave unsupported to ramble through medium to tall shrubs. Deer and rabbit resistant, it creates an excellent vertical effect in smaller spaces and containers. 'Ernest Markham' is a deciduous climbing plant that produces stunning single flowers up to 15cm in width. The flowers have six rich, velvety crimson-red overlapping sepals and buff stamens and bloom in early to late summer or early autumn. This Clematis prefers well-drained, lightly alkaline soil with roots sheltered and top growth in the sun, and should be watered deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish the root system. Fertilize regularly starting in spring, and prune in late winter or early spring using Type 2/Group B pruning to promote repeat bloom and new growth.
