Triceratops, the three-horn lizard, lived about 70 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. 9 metres in length and weighing up to 10 tons, it was the largest horned dinosaur. As its name suggests, it had three horns, a shorter one sitting on the nose and two one-meter long horns above the eyes. These horns and its large bony neck provided a shield which protected the harmless herbivore from the attacks of predatory dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus. Triceratops and other horned dinosaurs lived in large herds and were the last living dinosaurs of the late Cretaceous period of North America.
