Native to South America, Yerba Mate is well known for its energizing qualities as a coffee alternative and for its health benefits. Though it is technically an herb, Yerba Mate does contain caffeine, and is a favored alternative for those wishing to move away from their morning cup of joe. With the strength of coffee and the health benefits of tea, Yerba mate is high in antioxidants, contains many vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Once brewed, the tea has a vegetal flavor, often described as a blend of vegetables, herbs, and the same 'grassy' quality that is reminiscent of many green teas. As Yerba Mate will become intensely bitter when steeped in boiling water, we recommend 1 teaspoon for 12 oz of water heated to 175F/80C. Steep 4 to 6 minutes.
