These lovely earrings are made with two, intricately-patterned, 6mm fossilized turritella agate spheres, wrapped by-hand in solid, Sterling silver wire. Silver butterfly cutches fit neatly on the back for secure and comfortable wear. Turritella agate is a stone which contains spiral fossils of the gastropod, Elimia tenera; extinct, freshwater gastropods, frequently mistaken for turritella, a modern variety of sea snail. E. tenera disappeared during the Eocene period and may be found today only as fossils, preserved in southern Wyoming's Green River formation, as well as throughout regions of northern Colorado and northeastern Utah. The beds from which this fossil originates, date to approximately 50 million years. Each earring is approximately 8mm (0.3") wide.
