The Secret Decoder wheel is a substitution cipher in which each letter in the plaintext is replaced by a letter some fixed number of positions down the alphabet.
For example, with a left shift of 3, D would be replaced by A, E would become B, and so on. The method is named after Julius Caesar, who used it in his private correspondence. How cool is that?
All you need to do to get started is pick a cipher key. This will represent the starting position when encoding and decoding messages.
For example if you align the cipher so that A on the bottom wheel and F on the top wheel match you must maintain this alignment throughout the encoding process. The person decoding the message must also know to set the decoder wheel to AF.
