Lucky Dog - The beneficiary rule, commonly referred to as the "lucky dog" or "free pass", is a rule that allows the closest lapped driver to the front of the field to gain back a lap when a caution is called. During the 2003 season, to increase safety for the drivers, NASCAR banned racing back to the yellow flag after the caution is displayed. While this has increased safety (safety crews can respond more quickly) the rule contains a special "beneficiary" or as is more commonly known, a "lucky dog" provision.
