Mirage Hobby U-Boat U-875 Submarine Model Kit

Deschimag AG Weser shipyard at Bremen specialized in construction of special duties submarines. After trials of the type IXD1, new longer range vessels were developed specifically for service in Far Eastern waters. Type IXD2 ships could carry as much as 216 tonnes of raw materials from East Indies (with reduced number of torpedoes). These vessels were known as the "Monsoon-Boote" and were equipped with the latest "Schnorchel" device and with the Fa 330 Bachstelze rotor-glider. This rotary wing aircraft was tethered to the ships with a cable and a phone line and with the vessel cruising at high speed it could reach an altitude of 120 m, providing observation over 40 km. Combat use of this solution proved negligible, however. The U-875 was one of the last built in that series, as the contract for subsequent ships was cancelled. The U-875 was launched on 16 February 1944, shipyard no. 1083 and commissioned on 21 April 1944. She started service in the 4 Submarine Flotilla under Lt. Theodor Petersen. After completion of training cruises in March 1944 the ship was transferred to 33 Submarine Flotilla and commenced operations as a special transport vessel. She surrendered at Bergen during preparations for a trip to Indian Ocean. The submarine was then brought from Bergen to Lisahally and was sunk during Operation "Deadlight" on 30 May 1945.
