"An album so good it's scary." --
Revolver Magazine, September 2005
About the Artist
Horror is to cinema what rock?n?roll is to music: rebellious, transgressive, loud, and abrasive. And the sound of horror is every bit as important as the vision. Of course, every approach to putting fear on film is different, and in the case of MASTERS OF HORROR, that difference is encouraged throughout. Each filmmaker has put his own personal stamp on his film in the series, and each of them has a strong background in blazing musical trails in the context of horror films. What would HALLOWEEN be without John Carpenter?s own deceptively simple electronic reprise? And how about the strange, unsettling sound-music of Tobe Hooper?s TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE?
Rock and horror have long held hands. The teenage horror and atomic science fiction films of the 1950s filled the drive-ins with rebellion and a great beat you can dance to. In the intervening years since, they have continued their long romance. The Allman Brothers? "Ramblin? Man" was mixed into THE EXORCIST shortly before it was released. AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON soundtrack was filled with "moon"-referenced rock, from "Blue Moon" to "Bad Moon Rising"; it was an extremely important ingredient to the film?s success.
All of this is an integral part of making horror horrific. And, as in music, there are all shades. Horror can be quiet and sneak up on you, and just give you a chill. Or it can grab you by the throat and rip out your trachea. We hope to embrace the full range on MASTERS OF HORROR, and they are studded liberally with the songs you find here. When the creative collision happens correctly, all hell can break loose? and that?s what we?re hoping happens here. We have a collection of some of the finest minds in cinematic horror giving their imagination free rein? limited only by budget and schedule. Nobody?s making television here; we?re making movies.
As always, music plays an enormous role in the films of THE MASTERS OF HORROR, and this disc provides a healthy sample of the music that lies in wait for you in our series of films. With any luck, you?ll find it a marriage made in Hell. The Sound of Fear, Liner Notes for MASTERS OF HORROR Soundtrack By Mick Garris
