The French Lavender plant is native to hot dry Mediterranean regions and is thought to have been cultivated for over 400 years. It's also called everblooming lavender because it blooms from spring until frost. It has fuzzy gray-green serrated edge leaves and unique blue-purple flowers which are actually bracts (modified leaves) cradling small clusters of flowers. French Lavender is the least frost hearty of many different varieties of Lavender. Many gardeners place this type in containers to better protect the plant in cooler and cold weather. The French lavender has a lighter scent than other varieties and while it is not a common culinary ingredient, it is grown for its ornamental value in gardens, and its blooms are used in fresh and dried floral arrangements. Place plants in a sunny location 2-3 feet apart. The Lavender plant needs a loose sandy soil that is well-draining. After it is established, the plant only requires one weekly watering, as excessive watering will rot the roots killing the plant. If planted in containers, the plants can be wintered indoors where they will continue to produce delicate smelling blooms all winter long. Although they have no culinary use, the French Lavender plant is a beautiful addition to any garden!
