The reviews for this model sounded good - and I have another model from Linksys that works fine - so I took the bait. Bad decision! If I'd read the review dates more carefully, I'd have noticed that most of them were many years old, going back to 2001 or earlier! This I failed to do, however (my bad, I know).I knew something was out of whack when I opened the sealed package, and discovered a layer of dust coating the top of the router. The included ethernet cable refused to plug into the back of the router - a bad cable end - so I replaced it with a cable of my own. Entering setup, I found a primitive UI and limited set of choices; there was enough there, though to set it up for what he wanted. But it was all looking older and older. . . !Unfortunately, the router wouldn't work right away, and after getting information from the cable company to no avail, we called Linksys support to get configuration help with our 'brand new' router. We were told that it was out of warranty! No, I said, it's brand new! Checking the model and serial numbers, the tech assured us that it was indeed well out of warranty and offered to provide support for a charge of $29.95We turned down that generous offer and figured the configuration out for ourselves. Properly configured, it has worked fine for the last week. But I call it unethical to fail to mention in the product description that the new product you are purchasing is NOT COVERED by the expected manufacturer's warranty. Knowing that would have altered my buying decision.Prospective buyers, be aware that you will not be able to get support for this router without paying a fee - this thing has NO WARRANTY COVERAGE from the time you open the box. I mean it. This device is everything it is advertised to be and more.I had a ADSL line installed into my home in August. Since that time I have attempted to get multi-computer access to the Internet via a multitude of methods. I have attempted to setup a proxy server. This method works but was difficult to setup and never seemed to work with all Internet based services. I also spent 2 months trying to get a Cisco 675 router to work with ZERO success. My frustration level continued to grow and I ordered the Linksys BEFSR11 out of desperation.The Linksys unit worked right out of the box, almost literally. It took me only an hour from unboxing to having multiple PC's on the Internet. The majority of the time was spent researching my DSL providers PPOE settings. I have the modem running to the router and then running with a regular category 5 cable to a dumb hub and then each PC is connected to the hub. The router assigns valid Internet IP's to each PC and all my interne applications work great. Napster, ICQ, Newsgroups, and IRC all work wonderfully. Another great side affect of going to the router is that my overall access speed is about twenty percent faster then it was connecting directly from the computer to the modem.This is a wonderful device and I have recommended it to all my friends and family who are know entering the broadband world via cable or DSL. My only quirk is that a little more documentation should be put in regarding setup where a server is involved. Everything looked like it was set up right but it wouldn't work. Fortunately a friend of mine was savvy enough to rig it up and make it run.That aside it is reliable. Once it was up and running I had no issues, save file transfer in AIM. (Workin' on that one)I'd recommend it for anyone who already has a network switch and doesn't want to replace it. Boy, did I ever! It literally took about 5 minutes for me to get up and running. Of course, I already had a router set up, so it took plugging in two cables and two reboots of my main WinME machine (one with static IP to configure the router, one with DHCP back on). I configured the box then waited with bated breath when I clicked the 'Connect' button, but voila! we were on the web. The web interface is both easy and extremely flexible, with a ton of advanced configuration options, including the DMZ option. Of special interest to me is that my outbound socket woes have vanished -- the D-Link would not let me send e-mails or ftp puts greater than 2K or so, which was a real pain. I replaced my wingate software with this router (and an existing hub) and noticed an immediate speed increase in internet. It also eliminated some quirky behaviour (screen saver always ran slow on wingate!?!). The techs at ATTBroadband know about the product and even helped me find the correct IP address. I chose the 1-port because I have a linksys switch and it has improved my internet connection and gameplay. Also, the firewall capabilities on this little gadget are the most important. No more Norton's firewall or blackace defender software that can crash or impede your system. Overall, this is a 5 star product for the money.
