This cute, little display is a perfect addition for your Raspberry Pi. It features a 2.7" e-Paper/e-Ink 3-color display with a resolution of 264×176. As many other Hardware Attached on Top (HAT) expansion boards for the Raspberry Pi, this one interfaces using the high-speed SPI interface. Simply plug it into the Raspberry Pi's 40-pin header, and you can it to display beautiful, crisp images and text.

We've added 4 push buttons that can be read from pins #12, #16, #18, and #4. Given that this is not a Touch Screen, the buttons allow us to interact with the Raspberry Pi without the need to connect any peripheral devices (e.g., keyboard, mouse). We can use the buttons for making a basic user interface, having an on/off button, etc.

e-Paper/e-Ink is a display technology that mimics the appearance of ink on paper. Unlike conventional displays, e-Paper reflects light just like ordinary paper and is capable of holding text and images indefinitely, even without electricity.

Due to its ultra-low power consumption, wide viewing angle, and clarity of display (even w/o power), e-Paper is an ideal choice for applications such as labels, tags, badges, and others where fast refresh rates aren't necessary. Some of the downsides of e-Paper technology are its relative high price and slow refresh rates-in the order of 2 seconds for a full page-compared to OLED displays. Though animations aren't really possible, we can use e-Paper in displays for things that don't change too fast, for instance, ambient temperature and other Weather Station measurements.

Features:

  • No backlight, displays content for a long time even when powered down
  • Ultra-low power consumption, basically power is only required for refreshing
  • Resolution: 264×176 pixels
  • Interface: 3-wire SPI, 4-wire SPI
  • Display color: black, white, red
