U.S. #1267 was issued in celebration of 100 years of service by the Salvation Army, an organization that was founded to help alleviate social problems. Methodist minister William and his wife Catherine Booth first founded the East London Christian Mission in 1865 as a "volunteer army." The name was changed to Salvation Army in 1878, two years before the organization reached America.
