You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown Deluxe Edition (DVD)
Amazon.com You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown (1972) is the "Peanuts" gang's journey into politics, when Linus runs for student-body president and seems like a shoo-in when Lucy serves as his campaign manager. It's based on a 1964 series of comic strips, though the ending is new (and Charlie Brown is not on the ticket for VP). The bonus episode is He's a Bully, Charlie Brown, in which the gang goes to summer camp and Linus and Lucy's little brother, Rerun, gets taken by a marbles hustler. While still entertaining, this 2006 episode has a different feel from the classic shows, and David Benoit puts his own spin on Vince Guaraldi's music. Brand-new for 2008 is a 12-minute making-of documentary that discusses the You're Not Elected special, Guaraldi's singing of the "Joe Cool" number, and why the theme song--"You're Elected, Charlie Brown"--doesn't match the title of the show. Interviewees include Jeannie Schulz, two of the original voice actors, and the two longtime talents behind the "Peanuts" specials--director-producer Bill Melendez, who passed away in September 2008, and producer Lee Mendelson. --David Horiuchi
