At 370 feet across, Grand Prismatic Spring is Yellowstone National Parks largest spring. This area, now known as the Midway Geyser Basin, was once known as Hell's Half Acre. Appropriately named, Grand Prismatic Spring display a wide range of hues from cold to hot as the spring extends outwards into the treeless drainage field. From this high vantage point, you see just the tips of the lodgepole pines in the foreground before you descend into the basin below. A rust-colored orange crust covers much of the basin below. Watch your step - visitors are only allowed in designated areas, such as the boardwalk that can be seen just beyond the large hot spring. The observant puzzlers will notice the two buffalo carefully traipsing across the fragile crust. DSC
