The U.S. Postal Service celebrated the Year of the Dog with the issuance of a 29-cent stamp with an intricate Chinese paper-cut design by Clarence Lee, featuring a longhaired Pekinese, the royal dog of China. It was first issued on February 5, 1994 in Pomona, California in conjunction with the ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the 8th annual Chinese American Expo. Two Kenji characters on the left translate "Year of the Dog," and in the upper right of the stamp, the dog declares "Happy New Year!" in English. The dog is the 11th of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac associated with the Lunar calendar.
