Despite the dainty and delicate appearance of the flowers of the society garlic, it is actually a very tough and resilient plant with dozens of versatile landscape uses. It is a herbaceous perennial with gray green grass like leaves that sprout in clumps of from a underground rhizome. The flowers appear and long stalks that rise to about 6 to 8 above the main body of the plant. Flowers begin to appear as soon as nights begin to warm in the spring, and will continue until early in the the fall. The flowers are clusters of small star-shaped tubes about an inch wide, are a delicate shade of white and have a sweet scent reminiscent of hyacinths. The rhizome and leaves have a garlic like odor which accounts for the common name. Society Garlic can be used as border, filler, ground cover, mixed perennial bed, mass planted, or grown as a potted plant indefinitely (although dividing may be necessary over time, as this plant reproduces from the division of the rhizome).
