USS Skate, SSN-578 The story of USS Skate surfacing at the North Pole. The USS Nautilus SS-571, was the 1st nuclear submarine traveled under the North pole, USS Skate was the second nuclear submarine to follow the Nautilus, and was ordered to surface at the North Pole. It turned out the Ice was not as thick as they thought and all went well. Her sister ship, USS Sea Dragon joined her in the project.
