With the issuance of this eighth stamp in the Legends of Hollywood Series, the Postal Service honored American film legend Cary Grant. One of the silver screen's most beloved actors, Grant charmed audiences as a debonair leading man, bringing wit and sophistication to his varied roles in more than seventy movies. Born Archibald Leach in Bristol, England, he came to the United States in 1920. In 1942, he legally changed his name to Cary Grant and became a citizen of the United States, ten years after his first feature film "This is the Night." In 1999, the American Film Institute announced Grant ranked second among the top twenty-five men in its list of fifty greatest American screen legends. The 37-cent stamp was issued in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of twenty, on October 15, 2002, in Los Angeles, California. The stamp, designed by Carl Herrman of Carlsbad, California, and illustrated by Michael Deas of New Orleans, Louisiana, went on sale nationwide October 16, 2002.
