On October 10, 2002 in Washington DC; the USPS honored the African-American festival of Kwanzaa. These new 37 Kwanzaa stamps are the fourth to display the same design as previous stamps in Holiday Celebrations series. Kwanzaa is an "invented holiday. Created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, it is a seven-day cultural celebration beginning December 16 and ending January 1. It derives its name from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza," meaning "first fruits," and honors the African tradition of celebrating the harvest.
