You would think being a world class race car driver married to a world famous actress would make you stand out when you come to race in the Indianapolis 500. But when your teammates include two generations of Andretti's, Danica Patrick, and former IndyCar Series champion Tony Kanaan, it makes it a little easier for Dario Franchitti to fly under the radar for the Month of May. Franchitti did make his presence known on Pole Day, threatening to win his first Indy 500 Pole, before finally being overshadowed by the late day heroics of eventual Pole winner Helio Castroneves and Andretti-Green teammate Tony Kanaan. However, there were plenty of other stories to focus on during May as well. It was a year of celebration as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway honored A.J. Foyt's 50th year of competition at Indy. The media buzzed with stories of the first Indianapolis 500 to feature three female drivers. And on the race day, the big story was... the weather. Thirty-three drivers had to tame not only the unforgiving 2½ mile oval, but they also had to beat the weather radar. The absolute threat of race-ending rain threw playbooks and race strategies out the window, making every green flag lap a sprint to the finish, creating one of the most action-filled Indy 500's on record. As storms approached the Speedway, Dario Franchitti's final twist of fate turned disaster into his path to victory. It was the stuff of pure Indy legend, assuring the soft-spoken Scotsman of his place in history, and on the Borg Warner Trophy.
