Though he faded into obscurity following his death, he was rediscovered in the 19th century in an essay, written by Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Theophile Thore-Burger, which attributed sixty-six paintings to him and he is now considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
