From the Back Cover
Petrovic's critically acclaimed rendering of one of the literary masterpieces of the 20th century takes place in Moscow 1925. Writer Nikolai Masoudov, the "Master", is working on a play about Pontius Pilate when two suspicious representatives of the Soviet government start following his every step. Accompanying them is a professor of Black Magic, Voland. The government has condemned the Master's writings and at the same time, two close allies of the Master meet tragic fates, one sentenced to the Siberian gulag, the other found dead under a streetcar. Paranoia sets in as "The Master" believes not only that the Devil himself is after him but his assistant Margaret is also conspiring with the forces of evil. But when locked up in a mental hospital, it is Margaret that attempts his rescue under the ever-present threat of the evil forces that surround them.
