Palm trees are an icon of the good life - fun, sun, glamour, and good times! Mythically, they are the trees of heaven. Though palm trees are often associated with exotic tropical locales, there are over 2,500 different palm species in the Arecaceae family, and they grow in all kinds of climates - hot, cold, wet, and dry - on every continent except Antarctica. A classic California species, the California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera) is the only palm native to the western United States and the country's largest native palm species, growing in oases and canyons along the San Andreas Fault. Its native range extends from the Mojave and Colorado Deserts in California to southwestern Arizona and northern Baja California. Other common names include Desert Fan Palm, California Palm, and Hardy Fanleaf Palm. The California Fan Palm is characterized by a burst of fan-like fronds atop a stout trunk, ranging from 30-50 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide. Its trademark fronds are shaped like circular fans, measuring 3-6 feet across, and comprised of roughly 40-60 folded segments, each of which is usually ripped about one-half its length.A popular street and ornamental tree in the southwestern U.S., the California Fan Palm has become a favorite of gardeners across the globe, and is one of the few palm species to have earned the Royal Horticulture Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is a surprisingly cold-hardy species (down to around 10°F), but remains shade-intolerant and always requires good drainage.
