The High Priestess Tarot Card Tapestry

The High Priestess is a card that is associated with intuition and the subconscious in its upright position. When reversed, it represents a lack of inner voice and repressed feelings. For this card, we decided to portray Medusa as the titular character. Here, Medusa sits upon a throne of her enemies who were turned to stone. These statues act as the “veil” that conceals what lies beyond. Her feminine beauty intertwined with her monstrous intensity represent her intuition, fertility, and divine femininity. Behind her throne on either side, we see two pillars. They are marked with the Greek letters “?” “?.” These are the first letters in the Greek spelling of Persephone and Hades. Hades is the God of the Dead, while Persephone is the Goddess of Spring. They symbolize the masculine and feminine, darkness and light, spiritual and physical, negative and positive, death and life. Her position between these pillars suggests that she is a moderator of balance within these dualities of nature. She believes in the importance of understanding both pillars for the sake of knowledge and survival. As is commonly known, Medusa was born from divine parents. In this card, she symbolizes divine knowledge and rule. In her right hand, she holds the blindfold of Themis, Goddess of Justice. This represents Medusa’s connection to the divine law. In order to move beyond Medusa and the conscious mind (or what we see in this scene) into the subconscious (what is hidden behind the veil of entombed men), one must obtain a greater understanding of divine law by donning the blindfold and gaining spiritual insight. Her tail curls into a crescent-shape, similar to that of a waxing crescent moon. This symbolizes her connection to intuition, the subconscious mind, the divine feminine, and the natural cycles of the moon and of the seasons.
