The Great Gildersleeve remains one of America's most popular old-time radio comedies. Early in the Fibber McGee & Molly spinoff, Gildy was in charge of a girdle manufacturing company. He later served as Summerfield's water commissioner. Gildersleeve also was overseer of his late brother-in-law's estate and reared his orphaned niece and nephew, Majorie and Leroy. The household also included a cook named Birdie. While a character in Fibber McGee and Molly, Gildy occasionally mentioned a wife, he was a confirmed bachelor in The Great Gildersleeve.
