Kenshi Masaki, the half-brother of the original Tenchi, has been transported to the world of Geminar and forced to take part in an assassination attempt against Princess Lashra of the Shtrayu Empire. When the attempt fails, Kenshi is adopted into an alien culture where elite warriors--most of them girls--train to pilot the Sacred Mechanoids in the fortress-school of the Holy Land. Soon all the girls are chasing him. The evil Dagmyer spins an elaborate plot to overthrow the Shtrayu Empire, but his agents are so easily dispatched, it doesn't feel like much of a threat. The original Tenchi Muyo! (1992) established the anime genre of the harem comedy and introduced a cast of popular characters, none of whom appear in War on Geminar. The first episode overflows with new characters, terms, mecha, and places, then nothing happens for the next several hours. The viewer has no idea how Kenshi got to Geminar or why he commands such extraordinary physical powers. It's also not clear why the girls pursue him, as he's a nonentity, with none of his half-brother's charm. Director Koji Yoshikawa fails to establish the balance between adventure and good-natured silliness that made the earlier versions of Tenchi so much fun. War on Geminar feels like a standard-issue jiggle show with occasional mecha battles thrown in to break the monotony.
