The sharp stainless-steel probe (which comes with a silicone cover for safe handling) may be inserted into the meat and the oven door closed over the four-foot cord, which plugs into the thermometer. Set the desired 'done' temperature, and the beeper will sound when the target is reached. Or, detach the cord and probe and simply use the device as a timer, handy to carry in your pocket or clip to a belt when in other parts of the house where the oven's own timer alarm can't be heard.
