DVD format. Mill Creek Entertainment, 2006. Here are 4 b&w films, each of them dealing with a man called Sherlock Holmes. The Sign of Four was released in 1932 and stars Arthur Wontner. Holmes in this early feature is attempting to protect a young woman who has been threatened by an escaped murderer. Holmes finds clues in a freakish carnival and--yes--there's a tattooed man. The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes is another Wontner portrayal. 1935, b&w, 75 minutes. Holmes is up against a secret society called The Scowlers. In addition, Holmes' nemesis, Professor Moriarty, is very much along for the fearful ride. Arthur Wontner once again returns in Murder at the Baskervilles, 1937, b&w, 71 minutes. Here Holmes visits a famous estate where a stable boy has been murdered. Suddenly, a horse's trainer turns up dead on the moors. Could it be a giant hound? Or possibly Moriarty once more. The Woman in Green features the screen's most famous detective, Basil Rathbone, portraying Holmes, with his faithful companion, Nigel Bruce as Watson. This time, he has to deal with murders of young women, all of whom have had their right forefinger severed. The clues lead him to an organization of hypnotists and a beautiful deadly woman. Moriarty could well be hiding someplace too.
