With the Straight Eight cucumber, you get exactly what the name implies: perfectly straight, deep-green fruit about 8 inches long. The heirloom cucumber, chosen as an All-America Selection (AAS) in 1935, remains a favorite with home gardeners because of its reliable production. Growers rate the taste highly, and the Straight Eight is a dual purpose cucumber, good for either eating fresh or pickling. This variety's vines are vigorous and, with the proper care, will produce continuously. Known as monecious, each plant bears both male and female flowers. The fruitless male blooms appear first. They will eventually drop off the vine. When the female flowers blossom, they can be identified by a bulge behind the bloom that looks like a miniature cucumber. Successful cucumber growing requires planting in full sun in rich, well-drained soil.
