Design Story
King Gregory IV was both a monarch and pope of Rome from 827 to his death in 844. During his reign church and state were joined through the person of King Gregory IV and that is what he has come to be best known for. His contributions to architecture in the form of some of Europe's most important religious sites, therefore, is not as well known. Saint Mark's basilica and Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome are a few of the more significant architectural and design feats that Gregory oversaw. The interiors of these structures are decorated with classic Byzantine-style mosaics and motifs, including this monastic design.
