Showy Milkweed is a 2' to 4' tall native perennial with globular heads of variable colored flowers ranging from light pink to red or purple. The horns appear longer than other milkweed flowers. It is a plant of northern tier of states and can withstand very cold temperatures, requires full sun and will grow in dry or moist soils. This plant is widely used in butterfly gardens, wildflower meadows, and prairie plant areas. Showy Milkweed is especially valuable as a pollinator conservation species and is a primary host plant for Monarch butterflies. This milkweed was an important fiber source for Native Americans.
