Amazon.com The four-part OVA (2009) brings back put-upon Yuji Sakai and Flame Haze Shana in new adventures only tangentially linked to the main story of the popular broadcast series Shakugan no Shana. In the first episode, the mismatched pair rummage through a mountain of junk until Yuji finds the Reshuffler--a magic telescope that switches the main characters' personalities. Yuji struggles to walk in Shana's platform shoes while she tries to restrain her outspoken nature in something approaching Yuji's mild demeanor. Sadly, the farce ends before the filmmakers have a chance to explore all its comedic possibilities. "Domicile" is even slighter, as Shana and her friends plan a surprise party for Wilhelmina. The tone of the OVA shifts from slapstick humor to weepy melodrama in the two-part "Overture." Finding the Demon who devoured the soul of Junko, a high school girl turned Torch, requires Shana to become deeply involved with her troubled home life and budding romance. Yuji and the rest of the cast remain MIA during this adventure. A different voice cast takes over the familiar roles, but the performances are very similar, and neither Shana nor Yuji require much in the way of acting chops. The S OVA series offers a pleasant, if undistinguished, diversion for the many fans of Shakugan no Shana.
