Caesalpinia Sappan is a species of flowering tree in the legume family, Fabaceae, that is native to Southeast Asia. Common names in English include Sappanwood, Sappan Tree and Indian Redwood, "Brezel Wood", Chekke Sappanga. This is a small evergreen tree, with a few small thorns and bipinnate leaves. It blooms from June to September each year. Yellow flowers have 5 petals and form panicles. Wooden pod is red-brown, no cracking. It can be harvested after 8 years of transplanting. The preferred sappan heartwood is with older and deeper color. The pharmaceutical name for dried heartwood and bark of Sappanwood is Lignum Sappan.
