USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is the lead ship of her class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in the United States Navy. She was named after Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who served as Commander in Chief of Pacific Ocean Areas during World War II.
Commissioned in 1975, the Nimitz is one of the largest warships in the world, measuring over 1,000 feet in length and weighing over 100,000 tons. Her nuclear power plant allows her to operate for over 20 years without needing to refuel, giving her a virtually unlimited range.
