Provocateur, (lat. Provocator, "applicant") - a type of ancient Roman gladiator. Provocateurs are already mentioned in the late republican period, since the time of the empire numerous inscriptions have been preserved that mention this kind of gladiator. They were depicted dressed in a loincloth, a belt, a long waist on the left foot (ocrea), a manic on the hand in which the gladiator held the sword (manica), and a Roman-Celtic helmet with a visor, without fields and a crest. The chest of the provocateur was protected by a cuirass (cardiophylax), which was first rectangular, then often rounded. The arms of the provocateurs were a gladius and a medium-sized rectangular shield (scutum). Equipment provocateur weighed 12-15 kg. They were exposed to battles with Samnites or other provocateurs, and only one inscription testifies to the battle with murmillon.
