Johan Helmich Roman was the founder of Swedish music tradition at the beginning of the eighth century. Like many other musicians of his time, he was also a violin and oboe player, and in his compositions he mastered the new international idiom, acquired mostly during a London stay. Among the trios that survived the Turku fire of 1827, this disc presents the six that best convey the variety and intensity of Roman s work. The original versions, for two violins, are arranged in different tunes for two recorders and through bass, following a well-known practice customary until the first half of the eighth century. This choice gives rise to a further interest about these compositions, and contributes in spreading the knowledge of this author who figures very well in the European musical framework usually associated with Handel and Italian authors like Albinoni and Geminiani.
