I have created this stunning necklace from two REAL Madagascar Sunset Moth wings layered one on top of the another under a large magnified glass cabochon. (Read below for more on how I ethically obtain the wings!) The butterfly wings are set in your choice of an elegant filigree antique silver or antique brass setting hung on a long 28" chain. Pendant measures 1.9 x 2.4".
The Madagascar Sunset Moth (also known by its scientific name: Urania Rhipheus) is considered the most beautiful and colorful moth on earth, previously mistaken for a butterfly by scientists due to their vivid iridescent colors and day-flying behavior. It's bright assortment of colors is a warning to predators that it is poisonous if eaten. These moths are found throughout the calendar year all over the island of Madagascar. The native Malagasy people call them "lolonandriana" meaning "noble spirit" or "spirit butterfly".
Each piece will arrive in its own organza gift bag or gift box with literature on the species of butterfly!
*NOTE* My wings come from butterflies that have been raised on butterfly farms & conservatories and allowed to live their full lifespan, which naturally averages about 2-4 weeks and are then collected and preserved so that their beauty can live on! Butterfly Farming actually helps to preserve rain forests and also assures the survival of natural butterfly habitats. Native people are encouraged to grow plants and raise insects as opposed to clearing land for cash crops. Raising and selling insects is the only incentive many indigenous people have to save their tropical forests. I am proud to be a member of the RAINFOREST ALLIANCE! I support and donate to the Rainforest Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the rainforest and the thousands of species living in it, including the Blue Morpho Butterfly!
