This stunning pendant necklace is handmade with a real butterfly wing from my favorite species, the Morpho Sulkowski or the "Pearl Morpho Butterfly"! The Pearl Morpho's wings resemble a shimmering pearl or opal! The wing is embedded under a large 30x40mm magnified glass cabochon. The butterfly wing is then set in a silver plated setting and hung on your choice of a short 18" chain or a long 30" chain. You can also choose between a silver tone metal chain or an upgrade to a real .925 solid Sterling Silver chain. Please read below for more on how I ethically obtain the wings :) Each piece will arrive in its own organza gift bag or gift box with literature on the species of butterfly! The Morpho Sulkowski Butterfly, also known as the "holograph morpho" or the "pearl morpho", is rather rare and found only in Peru. The wings are a brilliantly iridescent pearl color that shimmers in shades of lavender to light blue to yellow depending on how the light hits them. The color in the butterfly's wings is caused by the diffraction of the light from millions of tiny scales on its wings. It uses this to frighten away predators, by flashing its wings rapidly. *NOTE* No Butterflies are harmed in the making of my jewelry! All butterflies are raised on butterfly farms and sanctuaries and allowed to live their full lifespan, which averages about 1 month, and then collected and sold so that their beauty can live on! Butterfly Farming actually helps to preserve rain forests and also assures the survival of natural butterfly habitats. Native people are encouraged to grow plants and raise insects opposed to clearing land for cash crops. I am a member of and donate to the Rainforest Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the Rainforest and the many species that live within it, including the Blue Morpho Butterfly!
