Alstroemeria, commonly called the Peruvian lily or lily of the Incas, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Alstroemeriaceae. They are all native to South America, although some have become naturalized in the United States, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Madeira and the Canary Islands. All are long-lived perennials except A. graminea, a diminutive annual from the Atacama Desert of Chile. Growing Peruvian Lily From Seed Sow about three seeds ¼in (5mm) deep in each. Wrap the pots in polythene to retain moisture. Place sowings in a temperature of 70F(21C). After three weeks move to the main compartment of a refrigerator, which will be at about 40F (5C), for three weeks. Return to warmth at approximately 70F (21C). Germination will commence in a further 10 to 14 days. The seedlings are ready to plant in the garden after two sets of true leaves have formed. Take care when transplanting from pots, as these plants do not like to have their roots disturbed when they are young. Place seedlings in the garden spaced 8 inches apart. Be prepared to wait for two years or even longer for the plants to flower.
