The American Pit Bull Terrier goes by many names, most of which were to avoid the negative press the breed has been undeservedly given. The AKC calls this breed the American Staffordshire Terrier, not Pit Bull. The word "pit" refers to the pit where dogs were put to fight each other and is not who they are, just how people used them. This breed is a true working dog due to their high intelligence, energy and endurance. They are commonly used as search and rescue dogs, police dogs, border patrol dogs, hearing dogs and service dogs. This breed has a smooth, short coat that can come in any color except merle, which makes grooming a breeze. The average size is approximately 14 to 24 inches tall at the withers with a weight of 30 to 60 pounds. The ears can be left natural or cropped and their tail is long and tapers to a point. The AKC recognized this breed, no matter what the name, in the Terrier Group in 1936.
