Pepper is universal. One of the civilization's oldest spices (along with its partner salt), it graces tables all over the world. When in a country where I don't speak the language and my soup needs a little pick-me-up, I just mime grinding pepper over it, and the waiter knows what I need. This wooden pepper grinder from Peugeot comes in a classic style, reminiscent of a rook from a chess set. To fill, unscrew the knob on top, remove the upper section, and pour in the peppercorns. How tightly the knob is screwed back on determines the grind. For a little variety, try a mix of black, green, and white peppercorns.
