Arachis glabrata or Perennial Peanut is an excellent ground-cover plant in the sandy soils associated with coastal regions in the South. Planted 12 – 18 inches apart these fast growing plants can cover an area in bright foliage and vibrant yellow blooms with ease. In low foot traffic areas, the Perennial Peanut can be used as a lawn covering interspersed with rye grass as coverage during growth. Mowing the ground-cover plants can encourage heavy blooming, but is not required. Historically, peanuts have been used as a forage crop.
