But in fact it is two other, less obvious components, both of them brought into vivid relief by the wonders of Blu-Ray technology, that define the sound: Zac Farro’s drums and Taylor York’s rhythm guitar. The way the younger Farro (whose older brother Josh co-writes most of the material with Williams) pounds those skins, the snare in particular, and the distorto-crunch attack of York’s guitar are hallmarks of much heavier music, from punk to metal to grunge, than that usually offered by young bands with sufficient teen appeal to earn a coveted spot on the Twilight soundtrack (Paramore has two tunes in the film, although neither is performed here); and yet they also have the pop chops, not to mention cute young dudes playing the instruments, to attract the kind of audiences who swoon over the Jonas Brothers, rock to Avril Lavigne, and idolize Kelly Clarkson. So when it comes to demographics, Paramore has it pretty well covered. In other respects, they still have a ways to go; the songs aren’t especially memorable (lyrically, a little less would be more), and Williams, for all her confidence, occasionally sings off-key. But they are still very young--bassist Jeremy Davis, the oldest member, was all of 23 at the
