The devise setting (1 - 5) is how deep the needle will penetrate your skin. If you have thin skin, then a lower setting should be your choice, but we recommend that you start with a higher setting and work your way down. This set also includes 4 different gauge lancets (from 26g being the thickest to 33g being the thinnest). So, if you have really thick or calloused skin, your right settings would be # 5 on your lancing device and using a 26g lancet.
