Venidium fastuosum is in the aster family and is a native to South Africa. This annual goes by several names: Monarch of the Veldt, Cape Daisy, and Namaqualand Daisy. This variety has a long bloom season and produces beautiful orange colored, daisy-like blooms. It reaches 24 inches in height, likes a position in full sun, and is perfect for the flower border. It does best in well-drained soil with regular watering, although it is considered to be fairly drought tolerant. Many gardeners grow Venidium in with their vegetable garden plants as the Venidium flowers are very attractive to beneficial insects that help in the vegetable garden. In frost-free zones, Monarch of the Veldt may grow as a perennial. In the spring, start the seed indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Press the seed into the soil, cover the seed with 1/8 inch of soil, and keep it moist. With a temperature range of 60 - 65F, germination is normally within 21 days. Space plants 12 - 15 inches apart. Seed can be started directly outdoors after danger of frost has passed.
