Saxifraga (Saxifraga Arendsii Purple Robe) - Truly, one of the most beautiful groundcovers that you will come across. This wonderful ground cover plant is readily established by Saxifraga seeds, and it creates a dense mat of evergreen foliage and carmine red colored blooms. It is also known as Mossy Saxifrage or Purple Robe ground cover, Saxifrages grow well in containers, beds, rock gardens, and anywhere a low-growing, spreading ground cover plant is desired. Mossy Saxifrage plants prefer well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade conditions. Purple Robe Saxifraga does not do well in the hot humid areas so do not plant in the deep South. This is one of the few ground covers that is both deer and rabbit resistant. Sow Saxifraga seeds directly outdoors in either in early fall or the spring. Prepare soil by loosening the top 1 - 2 inches and weeding. Saxifraga plants prefer well-draining soil, so amend soil if needed, adding sand or fine grit.
