Prunella grandiflora is a long blooming ground cover that puts on a display from late spring until fall. It is an aggressive, fast-growing perennial that spreads up to 18 inches. The lacey foliage reaches 4 - 7 inches in height with stems holding bloom clusters above the foliage. This variety, Pagoda Mix, has light violet-blue, rose-lilac and pure white flowers and is attractive to both butterflies and bees. Prunella works well edging the flower border, as a general ground cover, and in containers. Trim the spent flower spikes to promote continued blooming and to neaten the appearance. Prunella likes to grow in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained soil, and it is usually deer resistant. Start the seed indoors several weeks before the end of frost season. Or, directly start the seed outdoors after frosts have passed. Firmly press the seed into the soil but do not cover it. Keep the seed moist. At a temperature of 65 - 70F, normal germination is within 21 days. Transplant the young plants outdoors after danger of frost has passed and space the plants 12 inches apart.
