Stachys byzantina is great perennial ground cover that has charming flower spikes and pretty, silvery-green, velvety foliage. The blooms are lilac in color. Commonly known as Lamb’s Ear, this variety, Lanata, is a wonderful companion to a rose garden. It can be liberal with sowing its own seeds and it spreads from its roots making it ideal for a ground cover or for edging a flower border. Start the seed indoors in late winter, 8 – 10 weeks before the last frost. Press the seed into the soil but do not cover it. Keep the seed moist until germination. With a temperature of 70F, germination is usually within 35 days. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed. Pinch back at the time of transplanting to encourage more compact growth. Space the plants 16 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in moist, well-drained soil. Lamb’s Ear is usually resistant to deer.
