Helichrysum bracteatum is commonly referred to as Strawflower, and it is perfect for areas with long, hot summers. These annuals are easy to establish from seed and fast to grow and bloom. They provide a wonderful color display in the garden with 2 inch daisy-like blooms. This Yellow Strawflower will perform from spring through fall. They are prized as a cut flower and dry well keeping their color and being considered an everlasting. To dry, cut the flowers when the lower petals are just starting to open. Remove the leaves and hang them in loose bunches in a well-ventilated, warm area. Start the seed indoors 6 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Press the seeds into the soil but do not cover. Keep the seed moist until germination. With temperatures of 72 - 76F, germination is normally within 10 days. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed. Space the plants 18 - 24 inches apart. For areas with a long growing season, the seed can be planted directly outdoors once temperatures are consistently warm. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in moist, well-drained soil. Helichrysum is usually resistant to deer. Deadhead the spent blooms to keep them performing their best.
